This Neighborhood Contains …
"… 26 shipping containers, whose steel structures are often favored by architects for their low cost, strength, and portability." Inspired by similar container developments in Berlin and London, Douglas Burnham of Oakland-based Envelope A+D, has designed this new, temporary “neighborhood” of businesses San Francisco’s Hayes Valley, called “Proxy.”
The container neighborhood joins other “(v)acant lots in the middle of cities (that) are spurring all kinds of temporary uses, from guerrilla gardens to public art.”
